When does grinding stop being fun?

October 3, 2026 · Mikkel Sørensen

Every RPG grinds a little. The question is whether the grind feels like progress or like a toll booth. I've started tracking the moment a game crosses that line, because it's usually where I stop playing.

Good grind gives you small, visible wins — a new skill, a gear upgrade, a slightly faster clear time. Emberfall Chronicles keeps its optional, so you only grind if you want a cushion. That choice matters.

Bad grind shows up when the numbers balloon faster than your power can keep up, forcing you to repeat content just to stand still. The second a game feels like it's wasting my time on purpose, I'm out.

My advice: if you hit a wall, check whether smarter play solves it before you resign yourself to repetition. Half the time the grind is optional and the game just didn't say so.
